Free, envy-free rent splitting for roommates
The Rent Split Calculator is a free tool that divides rent fairly among roommates when the rooms are not the same. One bedroom may be larger, another may have a private bathroom, and a third may face a noisy street — so splitting the total evenly almost always leaves someone feeling short-changed. Fair Divider prices each room instead, producing a split that is envy-free: once the calculator assigns who pays what, no participant would rather swap into another roommate's room at the rent that roommate is paying.
Using it takes about two minutes. Enter the total rent, add each room, and add each participant. Each roommate then picks the room they prefer at the prices the calculator currently proposes; the prices adjust after every choice until they settle on a fair assignment. Say three friends rent a €1,000 flat. One bedroom is a bright double, another is average, and the third is a small interior room by the kitchen. Split equally, everyone pays about €333 — including whoever ends up in the small room. That person is quietly subsidising the two better rooms, and the resentment tends to surface a few months in, not on move-in day. Pricing each room removes the problem at the source.
Take that same €1,000 across three unequal rooms. Instead of €333 each, an envy-free split lands close to this:

Both columns add up to exactly €1,000, but only the envy-free column reflects what each room is worth — so nobody would rather move into another room at the price shown next to it. The exact figures come from how much each person values each room, which the calculator works out from everyone's choices.
There are three common ways to divide rent. Splitting it equally is the simplest, but it ignores that the rooms differ. Splitting it by room size is fairer, yet square metres miss what people actually care about — light, noise, a private bathroom, a balcony. An envy-free split goes further: it prices the rooms from each person's own preferences, so the result is one nobody would want to trade out of. That is the split this calculator produces.
