A plain-language guide to envy-free rent and item division
Fair Divider takes a shared cost — most often a monthly rent — and works out how much each person should pay so that the split is envy-free: nobody would rather have someone else's room at someone else's price. This page explains what that guarantee means and how to run a division in under two minutes.
A division is envy-free when every participant prefers — or values equally — their own assigned room and price over everyone else's assignment. In other words, once Fair Divider has decided who gets which room and what each person pays, no one would be happier swapping into another person's room at the rent that person is paying. Each participant looks at the whole table of rooms and prices and concludes that their own deal is at least as good as any other.
This is a stronger and more satisfying notion of fairness than simply splitting the rent equally. Rooms are rarely equal — one is bigger, one has a private bathroom, one faces the street — so an equal split almost always leaves someone feeling short-changed. An envy-free split prices each room so that the trade-off between size, features and cost balances out for everyone at once.
Yes. Whatever the rooms and whatever each person prefers, Fair Divider returns a single split in which every participant is content with their own room and price — an (approximately) envy-free division. The rent attached to each room reflects how the group values it, so no one is left feeling they got the worse end of the deal.
Fair Divider computes a fair, envy-free split that is accurate to the cent for the same inputs — an accuracy we test continuously. The whole computation runs on our server, so the calculator stays fast and consistent on any device.
Running a division takes four steps:
There are two ways to use it. On a single device (the calculator at fairdivider.com) one phone or laptop is passed around the room and each person takes their turn on it — ideal when everyone is together. In multi-device mode (fairdivider.com/multi) one person creates a room, shares the link or six-letter code, and each participant uses their own phone in real time — ideal when people are apart. Both modes run the identical computation and produce the identical result.
Yes. Fair Divider is completely free. There is no account to create, no ads, and no tracking or third-party analytics — only the strictly necessary local storage needed to run a session. The interface is available in nine languages.
