Fair Divider vs Splitwise for rent: which one do you need?
Two different jobs, and many flats use both
They solve different problems. Splitwise keeps a running tally of shared expenses and who owes whom, month after month. Fair Divider answers one question, once, when you move in: who takes which room and how much of the rent each person pays, so that nobody would rather have someone else's room at someone else's price. Many flats use both.
| Fair Divider | Splitwise | |
|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | Who gets which room, and at what share of the rent | Who paid what, and who owes whom |
| When you use it | Once, when people move in or a room changes hands | Continuously, every time someone pays a bill |
| How the rent split is decided | From what each person says each room is worth to them; the result is envy-free | You type the split yourself: equal, by shares or exact amounts |
| Rooms that are not equal | The whole point: the room with the balcony costs more, the one by the boiler costs less, and everyone agrees why | Not modelled; you decide the amounts before you enter them |
| Account | None; nothing to sign up for | Yes |
| Price | Free, no ads | Free tier with paid features |

| Devices | Web, iOS and Android, same result on all three; the rest of the group needs nothing installed | Web, iOS and Android |
| Languages | 9 | Several |
| Recurring bills, debts, settling up | No | Yes, that is what it is for |
Use Fair Divider when
- You are moving into a flat where the rooms are different (size, light, bathroom, noise) and "divide by the number of people" feels wrong to at least one of you.
- A room changes hands mid-lease and the new person should not simply inherit the old price.
- You want the decision made in one sitting, by the people involved, without one person playing referee.
Use Splitwise when
- The rent is already settled and what you need is to track groceries, utilities and who paid the internet this month.
- People pay for things at different times and you want the "who owes whom" done for you.
Use both
Fair Divider on move-in day to price the rooms; Splitwise from the first bill onwards to keep the running balance. The rent line in Splitwise is then the number Fair Divider gave each person.

Frequently asked questions
- Can Splitwise split rent by room?
- Splitwise records the split you give it: equal, by shares or exact amounts. It does not work out which room is worth more to whom; that decision has to be made before the numbers go in. Fair Divider makes that decision with the group.
- Is Fair Divider a Splitwise alternative?
- Only for the rent itself. It does not track expenses, debts or payments. If you need a running balance, keep Splitwise; if you need a fair rent split by room, use Fair Divider once.
- Can I use both?
- Yes. Fair Divider sets each person's rent when you move in; enter those amounts in Splitwise and let it handle everything that comes after.
